Winter Night

April 21, 2011

Hello Internet!

I have completed a new shape, which I call “Winter Night.”  This shape consists of 174 pieces, and is the “grid” style shape, of which I have a second blue and green example in my gallery.  Unlike the blue and green grid, Winter Night uses the pinwheel style of module.

To Glue or Not to Glue?

April 9, 2011

Hello Internet!

For a long time, I refused to use glue in any of my creations.  There was something about knowing that paper was the only ingredient.  Somehow, it seemed to make the origami more impressive.  But lately, I have had a desire to create shapes that I know wouldn’t work as just paper, which means using glue or some other adhesive to hold them together.  The first is the Crystal shape, which I originally made about a year ago, but did not keep because it didn’t hold together well.  Wanting to make this shape again, because I really like the way it looks, I decided to use glue.  Here is “Blue Crystal”:

But I liked the general shape so much, I decided to make another that repeated instead of being vertically symmetrical.  It was then that I remembered another reason I hadn’t used glue: it adds a great deal of extra time to the process!  Here is the Cactus shape, which features alternating sections of 3 normal and 3 introverted corners.  I call this piece “Violet Cactus”

Not Quite Infinity

April 4, 2011

Hello Internet!

I have created a new shape.  This one isn’t terribly large, but is a shape I have wanted to make for some time.  I have connected two 45 piece stars, which actually only takes 86 pieces because you lose 2 pieces and the shapes share 4 pieces, for a net loss of 6 pieces.  I call it “Not Quite Infinity”, because while it looks like the infinity symbol at the right angle, it isn’t a flat infinity symbol at all!

Here is the shape at an angle:

And here is the shape from the top.

Modular Origami Art is up and running!

March 16, 2011

Hello Internet and welcome to modular origami art!

After many months of folding, I have enough origami to begin showcasing it online.  There are twenty-six photos of origami in my gallery, and I intend to keep folding more!

All of the pieces in my gallery are original pieces made using various forms of sonobe’s module.  With a little luck, I hope to get the instructions for making them published in my own origami book.  Until then, enjoy the photos of what I have made so far, and thank you for visiting Modular Origami Art!
